Co-creating Coexistence Project

Callisto is a partner in the project “Co-creating Coexistence: Advancing policies, practices, and stakeholder engagement for integrating wildlife and livestock into sustainable multi-functional landscapes in Europe” (acronym CoCo; HORIZON Research and Innovation Actions, Project No. 101181958, 1 November 2024 – 31 October 2027).

The project aims to promote the peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife by developing sustainable solutions for the coexistence of livestock farming and wildlife, addressing challenges such as damage to agricultural production and livestock. CoCo seeks to collect data from at least 1,000 livestock farmers, 1,000 hunters, and 1,000 landowners across 12 EU countries, as well as qualitative data from a broad range of other stakeholder groups.

The project’s findings will be integrated into a Coexistence Roadmap, providing innovative practices and policy recommendations to reduce conflicts and strengthen cooperation in multifunctional landscapes, benefiting both local communities and wildlife.

Within the project, Callisto leads the coordination of the project’s 17 partners across three key activities:

• Reviewing participatory approaches for addressing conflicts between local communities and large carnivores, with a particular focus on damage to livestock and crops.
• Assessing innovative technologies designed to prevent and mitigate human–wildlife conflicts.
• Collecting and analysing stakeholder feedback to ensure that the project’s outputs are developed based on the perspectives and needs of the affected communities.

Project budget: €4,876,764.11 (100% funded by the European Union).
