In Memoriam

A significant part of Callisto’s identity and success is owed to our friend and colleague, Konstantinos Godis. His passionate love for life was contagious, inspiring everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him. His sudden passing in March 2012, at the height of his contribution and activity, did not diminish his legacy or the pivotal role he played in shaping our organisation. He remains with us in spirit.

Konstantinos dedicated more than 20 years of his life to the protection of nature and wildlife. Born in Thessaloniki, he studied Biology and Geography in the United States before completing postgraduate studies in Aquatic Ecology in the United Kingdom. He worked as a research scientist at the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete (IMBC) and, in 1992, co-founded Arcturos in Thessaloniki, where he was responsible for the construction of the Bear Sanctuary in Nymfaio.

From 1994 to 1997, he served as Manager of the Innovation Relay Centre at the Federation of Industries of Northern Greece before returning to Arcturos as Coordinator of its Balkan activities and Head of the Greek Livestock Guardian Dog Centre. In July 2004, together with a group of fellow scientists, he co-founded Callisto. As a key member of the organisation’s Field Team, he devoted much of his work to promoting the use of well-trained Livestock Guardian Dogs among livestock farmers.

Journalist Lazaros Chatzinakos holds a special place in Callisto’s history. He passed away on 16 March 2018.

His passion and dedication to journalism were well known. What is less widely known—but something we at Callisto will never forget—is his invaluable and entirely selfless contribution during the organisation’s early years. Beyond the expert communications advice he generously offered, and the many months of voluntary work he devoted to producing our printed magazine and, later, its online edition, he also made an extraordinary gesture of support by offering us, free of charge, his family home in the centre of Thessaloniki (5 Nikiforou Foka Street) to house Callisto’s offices from 2005 to 2007.

Those of us at Callisto who had the privilege of experiencing Lazaros’s friendship, generosity, and unwavering belief in the power of collective grassroots action to create meaningful change will always remember him with deep affection and gratitude.
