Rhodope Mountain Range
The Rhodope Mountains are one of Greece’s most ecologically significant mountain landscapes. The Central Rhodope mountain range represents a unique meeting point between northern and southern European vegetation zones. Within a relatively small area, all of Europe’s major vegetation zones are represented—from the Mediterranean evergreen and broadleaved forests to the Central European and Scandinavian forests of cold-adapted conifers and broadleaved species, including birch and Norway spruce. Unlike much of Europe, the Rhodope region remained free of permanent ice during the Pleistocene glaciations, making it an important refuge for plant species that survived while much of the continent was covered by glaciers. Today, almost 60% of all European plant species occur within the Rhodope Mountains, which provide refuge for 211 rare or threatened plant species. Among these are 15 glacial relict species and 50 species endemic to the Rhodope region.

The mountainous Rhodope is also a cultural crossroads, connecting people of different origins and traditions. Stretching from the Greek–Bulgarian border to the Nestos River, the Greek section extends across the regional units of Drama and Xanthi, while the largest part of the mountain range lies within Bulgaria. Covering approximately 2,000 km², around 84% of the area is blanketed by dense forests.
The region’s climate, topography, geology, and the varying degree of human influence have created a remarkably diverse mosaic of ecosystems.
The abandonment of mountain villages and the decline of traditional transhumant livestock farming—once involving more than 180,000 sheep and goats—during the middle of the twentieth century allowed nature to recover on an unprecedented scale, resulting in extensive natural forest regeneration. The highest peak of the Central Rhodope, reaching 1,953 metres, lies within the Fraktos Virgin Forest, one of Europe’s last remaining old-growth forests.
The Rhodope Mountains are home to many of Greece’s most important forest tree species. Their extensive forests retain the characteristics of healthy, resilient, and fully functioning ecosystems, supporting an exceptionally rich diversity of flora and fauna.
Yet this unique natural heritage cannot be taken for granted.
Decades of underfunding and institutional weakening of the Forest Service, combined with a management approach focused primarily on timber production, continue to threaten the region’s natural resources. At the same time, insufficient monitoring of fishing, hunting, and other human activities leaves the Rhodope Mountains increasingly vulnerable to unsustainable pressures.
Climate
The Central Rhodope is characterised by harsh winters, high annual precipitation, and temperatures ranging from –18.5°C to 38°C. The average annual rainfall is 694 mm, while the mean annual temperature is 11.4°C. Particularly high levels of precipitation are recorded in the Haidou area, at an altitude of 1,240 metres, where the average annual rainfall reaches 980 mm. The region’s humid climate, which resembles that of Central Europe, supports distinctive vegetation communities and provides ideal conditions for a rich diversity of bird species.
Water Resources
The Nestos River, the principal watercourse of the Central Rhodope, has shaped human activity in the region from the Neolithic period to the present day. The remains of historic stone bridges still found along its course testify to its long-standing cultural and economic importance. The river rises in the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria and flows south into the Aegean Sea, where it forms the internationally important Nestos Delta. Along its course, it is fed by dozens of rivers and mountain streams, creating an extensive hydrographic network that supports valuable freshwater ecosystems, a rich fish fauna—including brown trout and grey mullet—and well-developed riparian forests dominated by oaks, alders, willows, plane trees, poplars, and ashes. Among the area’s most spectacular natural features are the waterfalls formed along the Nestos River in the Kara Dere gorge, particularly at Arkoudorema and Stravorema, landscapes of exceptional natural beauty.
Birch Forests:
The Rhodope Mountains mark the southernmost limit of the silver birch (Betula pendula) in Europe. Birch occurs in scattered stands between 1,000 and 1,950 metres above sea level, interspersed among fir and black pine forests. One of the most characteristic birch forests is found northwest of Kara Dere, where the species forms almost pure stands. Birch is a pioneer species, meaning it is among the first trees to colonise open ground after disturbance. Over time, however, it is gradually replaced by more competitive tree species such as Scots pine and European beech. Since human pressure on the forests of the Rhodope has declined and sustainable forest management has been adopted, the natural habitat of birch has progressively contracted as forest succession advances. Conserving birch forests therefore requires targeted silvicultural management, particularly to control the expansion of Scots pine.
Scots Pine:
Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forms extensive forests throughout the Rhodope region. It is an important forest tree species that occurs nowhere else naturally in Greece and thrives mainly above 800 metres in elevation. Like birch, Scots pine is a pioneer species. It expanded rapidly following the abandonment of traditional land uses such as grazing and illegal logging. Today, natural regeneration of Scots pine is evident in forest clearings and mountain grasslands, gradually reducing the extent of open habitats across the landscape.
Macedonian Pine:
The Fraktos Forest in the Rhodope Mountains is the last refuge in Greece for the extremely rare Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce), a species endemic to the Balkan Peninsula that occurs naturally only in the Rhodope Mountains and on Mount Voras. Macedonian pine is easily distinguished from all other native pines by its five needles per fascicle, whereas other Greek pine species bear two. As a Balkan endemic and one of Greece’s rarest tree species, it is strictly protected under Presidential Decree 67/1981. Continued conservation measures are essential to ensure the species’ long-term survival and natural regeneration.
Norway Spruce:
The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is one of the defining conifer species of the Rhodope Mountains, which represent its southernmost natural distribution in Europe. The species forms extensive, highly productive forests and creates one of southern Europe’s rarest forest habitats: Norway spruce forests with an understory dominated by bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), a shrub that produces edible berries.
Black Pine:
Black pine (Pinus nigra) is recognised by its dark bark and large, rugged plates. In the Rhodope Mountains it occurs only within the distribution zone of beech and fir forests, as well as in thermophilous broadleaved woodlands, particularly in the Elatia and Fraktos forest complexes. It grows both in pure stands and mixed forests and represents a priority habitat under European conservation legislation.
Broadleaved Forests:
Broadleaved forests are relatively uncommon in Greece. In the Rhodope they are mainly found in mountain gorges and ravines and include maples, oaks, lime trees, European beech, and rowan.
Riparian Forests:
Riparian forests develop along rivers and streams and are dominated by alders, willows, and Oriental plane trees. These habitats play a vital role in maintaining water quality, stabilising riverbanks, and supporting aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity.
Peat Bogs:
The Rhodope Mountains host one of the rarest habitat types in southern Europe: active flat peat bogs, found at only four locations within the region. These small wetlands support highly specialised plant communities that thrive under very acidic soil conditions. They are of exceptional scientific importance because they represent the southernmost occurrence of a habitat otherwise typical of northern Europe. Peat bogs also function as natural archives of environmental history. Their acidic, waterlogged conditions preserve pollen grains for thousands of years, providing a continuous record of the surrounding vegetation through successive glacial and interglacial periods.
By analysing pollen preserved at different depths within the accumulated peat—a discipline known as palynology, a branch of palaeobotany—scientists can reconstruct past vegetation patterns and interpret long-term climatic changes in the region.
The broad altitudinal range of the Rhodope Mountains—from 100 to 2,000 metres—combined with their deep gorges, steep cliffs, forests and mountain grasslands, creates ideal conditions for a remarkable diversity of wildlife. The region supports all of Greece’s major forest-dwelling large mammals, including the brown bear, grey wolf, Balkan chamois, European wildcat, roe deer, and red deer.
Brown Bear: The forests of the Central Rhodope provide excellent habitat for the brown bear (Ursus arctos). The population is estimated at 25–30 individuals, which move freely across the mountain range on both sides of the Greek–Bulgarian border.
Balkan Chamois: The Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica), a mountain-dwelling ungulate, survives on the steep cliffs of the Fraktos area. Its remaining population is critically small—estimated at only 50–60 individuals—making strict conservation measures essential. Illegal hunting remains the species’ most significant threat.
Birdlife: A total of 139 bird species have been recorded in the Central Rhodope, representing approximately 53% of all bird species found in Greece. Excluding species associated primarily with wetlands, nearly all of Greece’s forest bird species breed within the Rhodope Mountains. The region also supports eight species of nocturnal birds of prey.
The conservation importance of the area is reflected in its bird diversity:
7 species are listed in the Red Data Book of Threatened Vertebrates of Greece.
27 species are protected under the EU Birds Directive (79/409/EEC).
70 species are recognised as being of Community interest.
119 species are protected under the Bern Convention.
42 species are protected by the Bonn Convention on Migratory Species.
A Unique Avifauna: The Rhodope Mountains are distinguished by their Central European-type forests, which support bird communities found nowhere else in Greece. For many of these species, the Rhodope represents the southernmost limit of their global distribution.
One of the most emblematic examples is the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus).
Western Capercaillie: The forests of the Rhodope are internationally recognised for supporting Greece’s only breeding population of the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus). Together with Mount Athos, the Rhodope marks the southernmost edge of the species’ European range. Populations occurring at the southern limit of the species’ distribution are generally less dense than those in northern Europe, likely due to climatic conditions as well as historical overhunting and forest degradation. The Rhodope population is estimated at 330–380 individuals, with local densities ranging from 10 to 16 birds per square kilometre, depending on habitat quality (Poirazidis, 1990). The capercaillie is a large forest grouse that spends much of its annual cycle on the ground. During the breeding season, males perform elaborate and highly distinctive courtship displays to attract females.
Golden Eagle: The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), one of Europe’s rarest birds of prey, nests on the steep cliffs and rocky escarpments of the Central Rhodope. It is a resident species, remaining in the region throughout the year, and feeds primarily on hares, partridges, and tortoises. Because its population has declined significantly, the Golden Eagle is subject to strict legal protection.
A total of 1,120 plant species have been recorded in the Central Rhodope. The actual number is believed to be considerably higher, as only a relatively small portion of the region has been thoroughly surveyed. Many of these plants are rare or endemic, occurring exclusively within this mountain range. Of the recorded flora, 290 species are considered of particular conservation importance, while 59 species are classified as rare and threatened and are protected under both Greek and European legislation. These include seven local endemic species listed among globally threatened plants, ten Greek endemic species, and eighty Balkan endemic species.
One of the region’s botanical treasures is the Rhodope Lily (Lilium rhodopaeum), a striking wildflower found only in the Central Rhodope. As a local endemic species, it is considered threatened and is strictly protected.
Elatia Forest – Kara Dere
Located in the central and northern part of the Drama Regional Unit, the Elatia Forest is one of Greece’s largest and most important forest ecosystems, with approximately 90% of its area covered by continuous forest. Its extensive woodlands, dominated by Scots pine, European beech, oak, and Norway spruce, support 712 recorded species of trees and plants. The towering Norway spruce forests—with trees reaching nearly 50 metres in height—together with the distinctive birch forests, create landscapes that closely resemble those of the Central European Alps. These northern forest communities are unique in Greece and represent the southernmost occurrence of several cold-adapted species. During the breeding season, the Elatia Forest also provides an important refuge for numerous bird species whose main distribution lies in Central and Northern Europe, highlighting the area’s exceptional ecological significance.
Located on the Greek–Bulgarian border, the Fraktos Virgin Forest covers approximately 550 hectares. Untouched by human activity for more than 500 years, it is considered one of Europe’s best-preserved natural forest ecosystems and is of outstanding ecological importance. Declared a Natural Monument and placed under strict protection since 1980, the forest combines pristine woodland, exceptionally rich vegetation, mountain streams, waterfalls, and an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. It marks the southernmost natural distribution of several Central European forest tree species, including Norway spruce (Picea abies) and silver birch (Betula pendula).
The forest provides habitat for many important and threatened species, including the brown bear, Balkan chamois, grey wolf, European wildcat, roe deer, red deer, and around 100 species of birds. To preserve its unique ecological integrity, all human activities are prohibited within the core protected area. Access is restricted exclusively to scientific research, and visitors may enter only with a special permit issued by the Elatia Forest Service.
Haidou forms the southern section of Mount Koula, whose northern slopes extend into Bulgaria, and lies north of the Nestos Valley. Gyftokastro (1,827 m) is the highest peak of Haidou, situated directly on the Greek–Bulgarian border.
The Haidou Virgin Forest and the spectacular Leivaditis Waterfalls attract both visitors and researchers, offering exceptional opportunities to observe rare species of flora and fauna. The wider forest landscape supports 102 breeding bird species, while its open grasslands provide important hunting habitat for numerous birds of prey.
Despite its outstanding ecological value, the area continues to face pressures from illegal hunting, including occasional incidents involving strictly protected species such as the brown bear (Ursus arctos).
The forests of Haidou are dominated by European beech, interspersed with Scots pine, silver birch, Macedonian pine, and a variety of other deciduous tree species. Above 1,000 metres, extensive mountain grasslands become the dominant landscape. These open areas are remnants of the traditional summer pastures that were used for centuries by transhumant livestock herders.
Following the decline of traditional pastoralism after the 1940s, natural forest regeneration has accelerated throughout the area, particularly through the expansion of Scots pine and silver birch into former grazing lands.
Today, signs of abandonment are evident in many villages across the northern part of the Drama Regional Unit. The remaining ruins bear witness to communities that were once home to Turks, Bulgarians, and refugees from Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace. Following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the Muslim population departed, leaving many settlements gradually deserted. Today, Stavroupoli remains the administrative centre of the area and one of the few vibrant communities in the Central Rhodope.
In contrast, the Pomak villages of the Xanthi Regional Unit remain among the most vibrant parts of the Central Rhodope. They are one of the few remote border regions of Greece that were largely unaffected by the major waves of rural migration. Their geographical isolation allowed local communities to preserve a distinctive cultural identity while maintaining a strong respect for the natural environment.
These villages are renowned for producing and processing, using traditional methods, one of the world’s finest oriental tobaccos: basma tobacco.
Until the middle of the twentieth century, the Sarakatsani—traditional transhumant pastoralists organised into extended family groups known as tseligkata—settled seasonally in the Elatia area. Through their pastoral way of life, they became the principal managers of the region’s natural resources and played a defining role in shaping its landscape and species-rich mountain grasslands.
At the end of each growing season, shortly before moving their flocks to the winter grazing grounds, they traditionally used controlled burning to maintain open pastures and prevent woodland encroachment. Their nomadic lifestyle and strong social organisation gave rise to a rich cultural heritage that remains closely linked to the mountain environment.
Today, the annual Sarakatsani Gathering (Antamoma), held every summer during the feast of Prophet Elijah in Elatia, continues to be one of the region’s most important cultural and social events.
Due to the heavily forested character of the Central Rhodope, cultivated land covers no more than 3,500 hectares. The region’s most important agricultural activity remains tobacco cultivation.
Tobacco fields are a familiar feature of both the Drama and Xanthi regions, where some of the world’s finest oriental tobacco varieties are produced.
The small mountain fields and fruit trees traditionally maintained by the Sarakatsani around their seasonal reed-built settlements continue to enrich the forest landscape with a mosaic of habitats. They also provide an important natural food source for wildlife, particularly the brown bear.
Wild and cultivated fruit trees are abundant throughout the forests of the Central Rhodope, especially below 1,000 metres in elevation. These include cherries, cherry plums, plums, apples, crab apples, wild pears, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, hazelnuts, and sweet chestnuts.
Limited irrigation has long constrained agricultural productivity in the region, leading many farmers to cultivate crops that are relatively drought-tolerant but of lower economic value, including barley, maize, oats, and clover.
Livestock farming in the Central Rhodope has historically been closely associated with the Sarakatsani, the traditional transhumant pastoralists who moved their flocks to the mountain pastures during the summer months. Although livestock production has declined considerably compared with the previous century, it remains an important source of income for local communities and continues to play a significant role in shaping the region’s cultural landscape. According to data from the Hellenic Agricultural Statistical Service, approximately 25,000 livestock animals are currently raised within the Central Rhodope region.
The region’s agricultural and pastoral heritage is reflected in its traditional architecture. Houses are typically broad-fronted, rectangular buildings, oriented to the south to maximise sunlight and provide protection from the harsh winter climate. One of their most distinctive features is the stone roof, constructed from locally quarried slate. These homes were designed to serve both domestic life and agricultural production. Large outdoor areas were dedicated to tobacco seedbeds and drying facilities, which occupied much of the household space, while the family’s living quarters were usually limited to a single room.
Traditional stone bridges and watermills, reminders of the region’s pre-industrial rural economy, were gradually abandoned and left to deteriorate following the depopulation of many mountain villages. According to local accounts, a number of these historic watermills and traditional stone fountains were deliberately damaged by treasure hunters searching for supposedly hidden valuables.
Many parts of the Central Rhodope are of exceptional ecological value and have been designated as part of the Natura 2000 network. These protected sites include Mount Haidou–Koula, the Fraktos Forest, the birch forests, Elatia Forest, the Falakro Mountain peaks, and the Central Rhodope Virgin Forest.
To safeguard the area’s outstanding natural heritage, the Management Body for the Protected Area of the Rhodope Mountain Range was established to oversee conservation and sustainable management. Its responsibilities include defining the activities permitted within the protected area and preventing practices that could damage its ecosystems. Environmental organisations are represented on the Management Body’s Board of Directors, ensuring that nature conservation plays a central role in decision-making. The organisation is headquartered in Mesochori, Paranesti, in the Drama Regional Unit.
The main environmental challenges facing the Central Rhodope are closely linked to the increasing intensity of human activities within the region.
Illegal Hunting: Although five Wildlife Refuges have been established where hunting is prohibited, incidents of poaching continue to occur throughout the Central Rhodope. Illegal hunting has had negative impacts on the region’s already small brown bear population, as well as on numerous bird species, roe deer, Balkan chamois, and other wildlife.
Waste Disposal: The dumping of waste in stream beds and forested areas creates sources of pollution and significantly increases the risk of wildfires, particularly during the dry summer months.
Overgrazing: Illegal and excessive grazing degrades forest ecosystems and prevents natural forest regeneration. Sustainable livestock management is therefore essential, together with effective controls to prevent unauthorised grazing in areas undergoing natural regeneration or active reforestation.
Quarrying: Quarrying activities alter natural landscapes and cause significant disturbance to wildlife. This issue is particularly evident in the Falakro Mountain area, where marble extraction has been carried out extensively.
Road Infrastructure: The dense network of forest roads fragments natural habitats and, when combined with inadequate enforcement, poses a serious threat to biodiversity. Paved roads further increase wildlife mortality through vehicle collisions, while also creating barriers that restrict the natural movement of animals between habitats. In mountainous regions, carefully designed tunnels and viaducts often represent more environmentally compatible—and in some cases more cost-effective—solutions. New road projects should also incorporate green bridges (wildlife overpasses) and dedicated wildlife crossings to maintain ecological connectivity. Particular attention should be given to the construction of the vertical road links connecting the Egnatia Motorway with Bulgaria, especially the Xanthi–Bulgaria and Exochi–Bulgaria corridors.
Dams: Hydroelectric dams contribute to renewable energy production but have also caused significant alterations to the natural landscape. Like major highways, they restrict the movement of wildlife and fragment habitats. Appropriate mitigation measures are therefore essential to reduce their ecological impact and preserve habitat connectivity.
Thermia Hot Springs – A Missed Opportunity: The Thermia Hot Springs have the potential to become an important destination for nature-based tourism and to contribute to the sustainable economic development of the region. Unfortunately, poorly planned facilities and inadequate hygiene standards have undermined this valuable natural asset. A carefully designed and environmentally responsible management approach could transform the site into an important attraction while safeguarding its natural character.
