Livestock guardian dog exchange network
We systematically promote preventive measures and best practices to reduce and prevent damage caused by wildlife to livestock, crops, and other agricultural assets, making human–wildlife coexistence an achievable goal.
The use of Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) is one of the oldest and most effective methods for protecting livestock from attacks by large carnivores, such as wolves and brown bears, as well as other predators. Livestock Guardian Dogs detect approaching predators and alert the shepherd or livestock owner. In many cases, their mere presence is enough to deter predators from approaching the herd or flock. When necessary, however, they will actively defend the animals, and in some instances may engage directly with predators to drive them away.
Callisto’s field teams, in collaboration with Protected Area Management Bodies, Regional Development Agencies, and local authorities, work throughout mainland Greece to identify high-quality Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) that demonstrate strong protective behaviour and are well suited to safeguarding livestock. Callisto then facilitates the exchange and placement of puppies and adult guardian dogs between livestock owners. Over the years, the organisation has established a Livestock Guardian Dog Exchange Network, which provides suitable dogs to livestock breeders who have an immediate need for them and who commit to meeting high standards of animal welfare.
The Network also aims to strengthen cooperation, solidarity, and knowledge exchange among livestock farmers across rural Greece, while promoting the wider adoption of livestock guardian dogs as an effective, non-lethal measure for preventing conflicts between people and large carnivores.
