Callisto is an environmental organisation dedicated to wildlife and nature conservation.
Twenty years ago, in 2004, we began as a small group of professionals with extensive experience in environmental research and conservation. Despite limited financial resources and many challenges, we shared a common vision and a strong determination to design and implement initiatives that would protect wildlife and the natural environment. It was this commitment that led to the creation of Callisto.
Two decades later, we can confidently say that our dedication to this shared mission has been the driving force behind our work and the foundation of our resilience.
Over the years, our founding team has grown to include people with the expertise, commitment, and passion to defend nature as a public and shared good. Throughout this journey, we have worked to highlight the importance of protecting wildlife and natural ecosystems, while promoting the peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife. Our activities focus primarily on Greece and the Balkans, while also extending to other countries.
Based in Thessaloniki, we work across many regions of Greece, particularly within the habitats of the country’s two largest carnivores—the brown bear and the wolf. These landscapes encompass some of Greece’s most valuable mountain and semi-mountain ecosystems, home to many of the country’s most important natural resources.
To date, we have implemented around 80 projects and programmes, ranging from small-scale initiatives to major international collaborations. Every project is guided by our core mission: promoting coexistence between people and wildlife, conserving biodiversity and natural resources, strengthening cross-border cooperation, and advancing environmental awareness, public engagement, and environmental education.
Looking ahead
Together with our supporters, volunteers, members, and friends, we continue our work, building on more than two decades of experience and our shared commitment to protecting nature. Today, Callisto is stronger than ever and ready to address the critical environmental challenges that lie ahead. Together, we remain committed to advancing coexistence between people and wildlife.
In the years to come, Callisto will continue to respond to emerging environmental challenges by developing innovative solutions, bringing critical environmental issues to the forefront, and implementing meaningful actions that contribute to their resolution.
