Jackal

The golden jackal (Canis aureus), also known as the common jackal, belongs to the Canidae family. Based on current data, it has the second smallest population among Greece’s large carnivores, after the wolf.
The Phantom of the Greek Countryside
The golden jackal is a medium-sized carnivore with a highly opportunistic diet. Although it is classified as a carnivore, it is in fact an omnivorous species whose diet also includes a wide variety of plants and fruits.
Its coat ranges from greyish-yellow to reddish-brown, with distinctive black markings along the back. Coat colour varies according to both the season and the region in which the animal lives. Its bushy tail measures approximately 30 cm in length and is reddish in colour, ending in a characteristic black tip.
The evolutionary origin of the golden jackal remains uncertain. It is generally believed that the species colonised the south-eastern Balkans from Asian populations. Today, the golden jackal is distributed across North-East Africa, South-Eastern Europe, and South Asia, with 13 recognised subspecies.
Although traditionally grouped with the other two extant jackal species—the black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) and the side-striped jackal (Canis adustus)—genetic studies have shown that the golden jackal is more closely related to the grey wolf (Canis lupus) and the coyote (Canis latrans).

Jackals have featured prominently in folklore, myths, and literature across many cultures, sometimes symbolising wisdom and resourcefulness, and at other times cunning or misfortune. The Bible contains several references to jackals, typically associating them with remote or desolate places, and even describes them as scavengers feeding on the bodies of the wicked.
Jackals also held an important place in Ancient Egyptian culture. The god Anubis was depicted either as a jackal or as a man with the head of a jackal. As the guardian of the dead, Anubis guided souls into the afterlife. Jackals also appear in numerous Indian legends and traditions, where, according to some beliefs, individuals said to possess a horn-like growth were considered symbols of exceptional good fortune.
In Greek mythology, both the god Hermes and Cerberus have, in some traditions, been associated with the jackal. In modern folklore and everyday language, the jackal is still commonly portrayed as a symbol of cunning and cleverness.
Today, the golden jackal remains an enduring part of rural folklore in Greece. People living in areas where the species occurs often speak of its distinctive vocalisations, whose eerie calls are frequently compared to the cry of a human infant. Yet despite these unmistakable sounds, the jackal itself is rarely seen. Its highly elusive behaviour, combined with its predominantly nocturnal activity, has helped create an almost mythical reputation as one of the most difficult wild mammals to observe.
Reports of damage caused by golden jackals are relatively rare. Owing to their opportunistic feeding behaviour and comparatively small size, jackals seldom attack livestock. Documented incidents generally involve newborn, weak, or injured animals that have become separated from the herd or flock. The presence of Livestock Guardian Dogs is almost always sufficient to deter such attacks. Moreover, any verified livestock losses caused by jackals are eligible for compensation through the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organisation (ELGA).
There have also been occasional reports of damage to agricultural crops, including vineyards, orchards, and vegetable crops. However, the relatively low level of damage attributed to jackals is probably the main reason why they are generally viewed more positively by rural communities than other large carnivores such as the brown bear and the wolf. Another group that occasionally comes into conflict with the species is the hunting community. This is largely due to the widespread perception that jackals compete with hunters for game species, although this assumption has never been scientifically demonstrated.
As an omnivorous species with a high tolerance for arid conditions, the golden jackal occupies a remarkably wide range of habitats, from the deserts of North Africa to the tropical environments of South Asia.
In Greece, its preferred habitat consists mainly of lowland areas below 600 metres above sea level, showing a clear preference for human-modified landscapes. Nevertheless, the species is also found at elevations of up to 1,000 metres. Elsewhere in its range, golden jackals have been recorded at elevations of 3,800 metres in Ethiopia, while stable populations occur at around 2,000 metres in India.
Areas with dense vegetation are particularly important, providing the cover necessary for resting and protection. Golden jackals also use ravines, wetlands with extensive reed beds, and other densely vegetated habitats, while they frequently venture into the outskirts of villages and other inhabited areas. Their dens are typically established in natural rock cavities, beneath the roots of large trees, or in abandoned burrows originally excavated by other mammals, such as badgers and foxes.
The golden jackal’s diet varies according to both the season and the habitat in which it lives. Its omnivorous and opportunistic feeding strategy allows it to exploit a wide variety of food resources. Rather than being a specialised predator, the golden jackal is an opportunistic forager that readily consumes both natural and human-derived food.
Its diet includes hares, rodents, lizards, snails, amphibians, small and medium-sized birds, bird eggs, and a wide variety of fruits. It also scavenges around refuse sites near villages, feeds on carrion and waste from livestock farms, and, when the opportunity arises, may prey on unprotected sheep and goats, particularly young animals.
Although golden jackals are often observed hunting alone, they also cooperate with one another. Small groups of two to five individuals may hunt together, significantly increasing their chances of successfully capturing prey.
Their highly developed sense of smell and acute hearing are among their greatest hunting advantages, enabling them to detect even small prey concealed within dense vegetation.
Golden jackals typically live in small family groups, usually consisting of 2–5 individuals. A pack is generally made up of the dominant breeding pair, together with their offspring from the current year and, occasionally, from previous years. Although golden jackals reach sexual maturity at around 11 months of age, young animals often remain with their family group beyond this age. Rather than breeding immediately, they help the dominant pair by assisting in food gathering and caring for the new pups. In South-Eastern Europe, the breeding season extends from January to March, with litters of 1–9 pups usually born during April and May. While the female is pregnant, the male and the remaining members of the family group provide food and help ensure her survival.
Each family group occupies and defends a territory, which is regularly patrolled and marked using scent and vocalisations. Territorial overlap between neighbouring groups is generally limited. Although scientific knowledge of the species’ spatial ecology is still incomplete, current research suggests that golden jackal territories typically range from 2 to 15 km². As with most territorial carnivores, both pack size and territory size depend largely on habitat quality, food availability, and the spatial distribution of food resources.
The golden jackal is a widely distributed member of the Canidae family, occurring across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
In Europe, its distribution is concentrated primarily in the Balkan Peninsula, although established populations have also been reported in north-eastern Italy. According to current data, Bulgaria supports the largest and healthiest golden jackal population in Europe.
In Africa, the species occurs across North Africa and East Africa, while in Asia its range extends from Turkey, the Caucasus, and the Middle East eastwards through the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar and Thailand.
In Greece, the golden jackal has a fragmented distribution, occurring in at least seven geographically distinct population areas across the mainland and the island of Samos. These populations are found in the Peloponnese, Phocis, Central Macedonia, Chalkidiki, the Nestos–Vistonida region, Evros, and Samos.
The golden jackal is the only medium-sized mammal in Greece to have experienced such a dramatic population decline in recent decades. The species was heavily persecuted throughout the country, and between 1974 and 1980 more than 7,000 individuals were officially recorded as having been killed. According to the latest nationwide survey, conducted in 2001, the minimum population was estimated at approximately 1,000 individuals (adults and juveniles), organised into 153–170 family groups. The healthiest subpopulations occur in the Nestos Delta and Mornos Delta regions, with estimated densities exceeding 3 and 1.7 individuals per km², respectively—among the highest population densities recorded anywhere in the species’ global range. The widespread drainage of wetlands, once promoted as part of Greece’s development policies, has resulted in the loss of critical habitat for breeding and long-term survival. Combined with continued habitat degradation, this has contributed to the disappearance of golden jackals from several areas where they were present until relatively recently.
Today, the principal threats facing the species in Greece include wildfires, urban expansion, the illegal use of poisoned baits, and habitat fragmentation caused by roads that lack adequate wildlife crossing structures and ecological connectivity measures. These factors continue to drive the species’ decline across the Greek countryside. Golden jackals are also threatened by road collisions and illegal hunting. An additional conservation challenge is the species’ highly fragmented distribution. The Greek population is divided into numerous small, isolated subpopulations spread over a wide geographical area—from the Mani Peninsula in the Peloponnese to Soufli in Thrace and the island of Samos. This fragmentation makes the species more vulnerable to local extinctions caused by natural disasters and significantly restricts the exchange of genetic material between populations.
The golden jackal should be recognised as an important ally of agriculture and livestock farming in the Greek countryside. It is one of the principal predators of animals that damage agricultural crops, helping to regulate rodent populations naturally. As a scavenger, the golden jackal also removes animal carcasses from the landscape, reducing the risk of disease transmission. In some cases, it contributes to the health of livestock herds by removing weak, sick, or otherwise vulnerable animals. Through these ecological functions, the golden jackal plays an important role in maintaining healthy and balanced rural ecosystems.
The golden jackal is capable of hybridising with the domestic dog, the grey wolf, the coyote, and the Australian dingo (Canis lupus dingo), producing fertile offspring. Hybridisation between golden jackals and domestic dogs is thought to reduce the fertility of the offspring, although it does not render them completely sterile. In Russia, an experimental breeding programme crossed golden jackals with Siberian Huskies in an effort to combine the jackal’s exceptional sense of smell with the husky’s remarkable tolerance to cold climates and the jackal’s greater resilience to heat. The resulting hybrids, known as Sulimov dogs, were named after the scientist who developed the breeding programme. They are currently used for security and detection work at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow, where their highly developed olfactory abilities have proven particularly effective.
Unfortunately, the legal status of the golden jackal in Greece has long been characterised by considerable ambiguity. Although it is not listed as a game species, it has also not been explicitly included among Greece’s protected wildlife species. Until 1990, the golden jackal was officially classified as a harmful species, and until 1981 hunters who presented the animal’s feet as proof of killing a jackal received a financial reward from the local Forest Service.
At the European level, the golden jackal is not considered a priority species for conservation, as it is listed under Annex V of the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), which covers species whose exploitation may be subject to management measures. However, the rapid decline of populations in countries such as Greece clearly demonstrates the need for stronger legal protection.
Globally, the golden jackal is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. In contrast, it is listed as Vulnerable in the Red Data Book of Threatened Animals of Greece, reflecting the significant conservation challenges facing the species nationally and the risk that it could become endangered in the near future.
This legislative gap makes the role of environmental organisations particularly important. In Greece, NGOs such as Callisto have played a crucial role in promoting the conservation of the golden jackal and advocating for stronger protection measures to ensure the species’ long-term survival.
