Conserving the Dinaric-Pindos Brown Bear Through Science, Cooperation and Long-term Action
The LIFE DinPin Bear project aims to secure the long-term conservation of the Dinaric-Pindos brown bear population by promoting a coordinated, science-based and transnational approach to conservation. Bringing together partners from nine countries, the project addresses the key challenges affecting one of Europe’s most important brown bear populations, including habitat fragmentation, human-bear conflicts, inconsistent management practices and the need for stronger international cooperation.
Through scientific research, practical conservation actions, stakeholder engagement, capacity building and effective communication, LIFE DinPin Bear will establish the foundations for coordinated population-level management that benefits both biodiversity and local communities. By combining innovation with proven conservation practices, the project seeks to ensure that brown bears continue to thrive across the Dinaric-Pindos region for generations to come.
1. Improve Scientific Knowledge for Population-Level Conservation
Effective conservation begins with sound scientific evidence. LIFE DinPin Bear will strengthen knowledge of the Dinaric-Pindos brown bear population through harmonised genetic monitoring, habitat suitability assessments, telemetry studies and landscape connectivity analyses. By applying common methodologies across participating countries, the project will improve understanding of population dynamics, genetic diversity and bear movements, providing a shared scientific basis for future conservation and management decisions.
2. Protect Habitat Connectivity and Support Ecological Resilience
Maintaining connected landscapes is essential for the long-term survival of brown bears. The project will identify priority ecological corridors, assess habitat fragmentation and develop practical recommendations to improve landscape permeability across the Dinaric-Pindos region. These actions will support the preservation of genetic exchange, facilitate natural dispersal, and contribute to a more resilient and connected brown bear population that is better able to adapt to future environmental challenges.
3. Promote Coexistence Between People and Brown Bears
Encouraging peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife lies at the heart of LIFE DinPin Bear. The project will reduce human-bear conflicts by implementing effective damage prevention measures, strengthening Bear Intervention Teams, supporting Bear Smart Communities and promoting sustainable bear-friendly economic opportunities. Through practical solutions and close collaboration with local communities, the project aims to build trust, reduce conflicts and create lasting benefits for both people and nature.
4. Strengthen Capacity, Governance and International Cooperation
Because the Dinaric-Pindos brown bear population extends across national borders, successful conservation requires coordinated management and shared responsibility. LIFE DinPin Bear will harmonise monitoring protocols, strengthen institutional capacities, develop common management guidelines and promote cross-border cooperation among public authorities, scientists and conservation organisations. These efforts will establish a stronger governance framework for long-term population-level conservation throughout the region.
5. Build a Lasting Conservation Legacy
LIFE DinPin Bear is designed to create impacts that extend well beyond the project’s lifetime. Through stakeholder engagement, communication, education, networking and the replication of successful conservation practices, the project will ensure that its knowledge, tools and achievements continue to benefit biodiversity conservation across Europe. By developing an After-LIFE strategy and encouraging the uptake of project results by other organisations and initiatives, the project will leave a lasting legacy for brown bear conservation and transnational cooperation.
