Follow the progress of brown bear genetic sampling across the Dinaric–Pindos region

Where are genetic samples being collected? How is sampling progressing across different countries? You can now track the process in real time on an interactive map!

As part of the LIFE DinPin Bear project, teams of researchers, wildlife experts, and dedicated volunteers (citizen scientists) are joining forces to collect non-invasive genetic samples of brown bears across the entire Dinaric–Pindos region.

We have developed an online tool that allows everyone — from project teams and volunteers to the wider public — to monitor sampling progress:

LIFE DinPin Bear Interactive Sampling Map

How Does It Work? Each dot on the map represents a collected sample whose data has been entered into the Mbase Portal — the database utilized for managing genetic monitoring data. As new field samples are registered, additional dots appear on the map!

Why Is Genetic Monitoring Essential? Genetic monitoring enables us to gain a comprehensive understanding of:

-The demographic status and population structure of brown bears.

-Their spatial distribution and levels of transboundary connectivity.

-The preservation of genetic diversity, providing critical scientific data necessary for the long-term conservation of the species.

A sincere thank you to all project partners, field teams, and citizen scientists contributing daily to this international effort!

Visit the map regularly and watch the sampling network expand!
